Ex-Tottenham scout: This is why 'fancy Dan' Lucas Bergvall won't become 'top-class'
That is the opinion of former senior Tottenham scout, Bryan King, who exclusively spoke to Football Insider.
The 20-year-old is keen to leave North London this summer and has informed the Lilywhites of his desire.
Bergvall is under contract until 2031 and will not come cheap, with the likes of Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest said to be interested in making a move.
The midfielder was selected for Graham Potter's World Cup squad and will likely address his future upon the conclusion of Sweden's participation.
Bergvall made just 23 Premier League appearances last season after suffering an ankle sprain that kept him out for almost two months.
Bryan King unconvinced by Lucas Bergvall
Bergvall joined Tottenham from Djurgarden in 2024, signing in a deal worth around £8.5m.
The youngster was immediately impressive, breaking into Ange Postecoglou's team and eventually starting week in, week out.
Thomas Frank's arrival saw those minutes fall, and under Roberto De Zerbi, Bergvall started just one game and was left out completely in Tottenham's final two matches of the season.
"He'd probably be more suited for Nottingham Forest than he is for Tottenham," King told Football Insider. "Don't fancy him.
"I honestly don't think he's strong enough to become a top-class midfield player. Fancy Dan, likes to do a little bit on the ball, but for me, he isn't going to win you a title.
"Decent young player. Potential. But he isn't going to be top, top flight. He's not a Stefan Schwarz from the old Swedish days.
"I mean, you know, talking about the old Swedish players. They were proper players. They were proper midfield players."
What Bergvall has said on his Tottenham future
Bergvall is one of a few players looking to leave Tottenham this summer.
Lukas Vuskovic has also expressed his desire to leave, and Cristian Romero is expected to push for an exit.
Asked about his future last week, Bergvall said: "Right now, I’m just trying to focus on the World Cup.
"Whatever happens after that, I’ll deal with it then. I’m fully focused on the World Cup."
