Tottenham idol ‘cannot believe it’ as Cristian Romero footage analysed
Paul Robinson has backed VAR official Mike Dean’s decision not to intervene in an incident between Tottenham defender Cristian Romero and Marc Cucurella.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one said Romero’s action was not worth of a red and “did not effect” Harry Kane’s late equaliser.
As shown on Sky Sports (15 August), Romero pulled Chelsea defender Cucurella by the hair in Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.
Referee Anthony Taylor did not spot the incident and VAR chose not to intervene.
The subsequent corner was headed in by Harry Kane, much to the dismay of Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel.
When asked by Football Insider if Romero was treading a thin line with his actions, Robinson said: “I like it.
“Romero has an edge and Spurs have not had a player like that for a long time. He is a winner.
“I cannot believe in this day and age we are talking about hair pulling on a football pitch.
“Could VAR intervene? It did not effect the goal. It was the corner after that the goal was scored from so it was a different passage of play.
“Was it a red card? Not in my opinion. VAR shouldn’t get involved for me. They are both pulling and grabbing each other before he pulls his hair.
“I understand why Chelsea feel hard done by but I think VAR was right not to intervene.”
