Tottenham idol fumes after Sky footage of Harry Kane analysed – ‘I can’t understand it’
Paul Robinson has claimed Tottenham were denied a clear penalty against Brentford on Boxing Day.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one said Harry Kane was fouled by Ben Mee in the second half.
As shown on Sky Sports (26 December), Kane went to ground following contact from Mee inside the 18-yard box.
Referee David Coote did not deem the contact as worthy of a foul and VAR official Stuart Attwell chose not to intervene.
The decision had a bearing on the game as Antonio Conte’s side drew 2-2 at the Brentford Community Stadium.
When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on the controversial incident, Robinson said: “It was a penalty.
“The only reason I can see for it not being given is that they wanted to stay with the on-field decision. They did not see it as clear and obvious.
“Referees cannot always rely on VAR to correct their decisions. They should not wait for VAR to make a decision for them. There is more leniency. They have to referee it themselves. That may have been the problem.

“It is very difficult to argue against that being a penalty. Only Brentford fans would say it wasn’t.
“I just cannot understand why the referee has not given it. Mee has both arms around him and has made no attempt to play the ball. It should have been a penalty.”
