Tottenham idol issues ‘big’ Alfie Devine claim after journalist’s exit update

Paul Robinson has backed Tottenham to send Alfie Devine out on loan ahead of next season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one is “a big advocate” of young players heading out on loan.

Devine scored a sublime goal for England’s under-19s against Austria last Sunday.

The 17-year-old made his debut for Spurs in January of last year against Marine but hasn’t featured for the first team since.

According to The Athletic‘s Charlie Eccleshare (22 June), Spurs plan to tie the midfielder down to a new deal before sending him out on loan.

Championship, League One and Scottish Premiership clubs are all said to be interested.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on what is best for the teenager, Robinson said:

“If you look at where the squad is, and the players Antonio Conte is looking to bring in, the squad is going onto the next level.

“Devine is part of a very strong youth set up. There is a production line of players.

“But for his development there is no point in him being a bit-part squad player.

“If he can secure a Championship loan where he can play week in, week out I think that would be best.

“I am a big advocate of players like Devine going out on loan. He needs to play football where it matters. He needs to play against men who have mortgages, bills to pay.

“I think a loan move would do him the world of good.”

In other news, Tottenham have been backed to complete four under-the-radar signings by 12 July.
