Tottenham idol issues two-word verdict on Djed Spence after new development

Paul Robinson has claimed there is “no chance” of Djed Spence being given a run of games by Tottenham manager Antonio Conte when the season resumes.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one does not believe Spence, 22, was signed with Conte’s backing.

Spence joined Tottenham from Middlesbrough in the summer but has struggled to establish himself in the first team.

However, the right-back was chosen to start Spurs’ friendly over Motherwell on 9 December.

The Lilywhites won 4-0 over the Scottish side as they step up their preparations for the Premier League’s return later this month.

When asked by Football Insider if Spence may be handed a chance in the second half of the season, Robinson said: “No chance.

“I think it is quite clear that the manager doesn’t fancy him. Why else would he have barely played him during the first half of the season?

“I don’t think he was the manager’s signing and that begs the question as to why he was bought in the first place. It wasn’t a quick signing either. They were chasing him for quite a while.

“I think the right wing-back position is an area they will look to strengthen in next year. I cannot see Spence being given a good run of games when the season resumes.

“He is still young though. There is plenty of time for him to make it at Spurs. I just cannot see him being given a proper run of games this season.”
