Tottenham in hunt to sign magician, £17m move close as replacement for brilliant 27-y/o – report

Tottenham are firmly in the hunt to sign Norwich City playmaker James Maddison this summer, according to a report.

The Sun on Sunday claim Leicester City are in pole position to land the Championship “magician” as they look for a replacement for “brilliant” wide forward Riyad Mahrez.

It is said that Leicester are prepared to pay £17million for the 21-year-old and are “confident” of a deal, and may even go higher amid Manchester City interest in Mahrez, 27.

The Sun on Sunday report that Tottenham and Huddersfield are also keeping close tabs on Maddison as he is almost certain to leave Norwich in the summer following a disappointing campaign at the club.

Maddison cost just £2.5m from Coventry two years ago and spent last season on loan at Aberdeen but he has made a huge impact this season for Daniel Farke’s 12th-placed side, scoring 15 goals and supplying 10 assists in 44 matches in all competitions.

Football Insider verdict:

Given that Maddison has been one of the outstanding players in the Championship this season for a club rooted in mid-table, it is easy to see why it will take a mega fee to get him and Norwich are confident of getting that. The rising star is technically gifted, durable and can conjure and score goals from seemingly nothing. He is also English and young, as well as being tied down to a contract that has three more years to run. Norwich will still be in the second tier next season and selling Maddison could enable them to totally reshape their squad for a new promotion push.

In other Tottenham transfer news, the club are working on a deal to sign a 29-year-old left footer who would be a sensational signing.
