Kieran Maguire: Tottenham in ‘pain’ amid ‘hostile’ pushback after £3m blow

Tottenham will hope their “short-term” pain will turn into “long term” gains with regards to empty seats at their stadium.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the results of a recent study conducted by OLGB.

The research, as relayed by the Daily Mail on Tuesday (25 January), shows that Spurs are losing out on £165,000 every match because of unsold tickets.

That equates to £3.135m across 19 Premier League games and is taken from an average of 8,224 empty seats at each match.

But Maguire argues that Spurs will be relatively untroubled by the statistics and will have a plan to increase matchday income in the future.

“Spurs want to maximise revenues,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“What they have to do is tailor their prices and volumes of tickets.

“They have one of the most sophisticated pricing systems given the number of price points they have for season tickets, so they’ve addressed it before.

“They were hoping to monetise the football tourist to a greater degree pre-Covid, especially given the popularity of some of their players such as Son.

“That hasn’t materialised to the extent that they wanted because of Covid. I suspect Spurs will sit tight and await further relaxation of travel.

“What they don’t want to do is go down the route of lowering prices and then getting pushback when they have to lower them again.

“We’ve already seen the pushback in terms of them raising catering price twice this season. That proved a pretty hostile reaction.

“They will take the view that it is short-term pain with a view to long-term revenue maximisation.”

Spurs revealed matchday income of £93.5m in their last set of accounts for 2019-20, though that figure was impacted by the pandemic.

They will release their account for 2020-21 in the first quarter of 2022.
