Tottenham insider predicts breakthrough for ‘best in the country’ Gunter

John Wenham is “really excited” about Tottenham youth goalkeeper Luca Gunter.

Spurs insider Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels, has been wowed by the stopper this season.

Gunter, 16, signed a scholarship with Tottenham in the summer but only made his debut for the club’s Under 18 side on 16 October after sustaining an injury on England duty at the beginning of the season.

The young stopper started as Tottenham’s Under 18s progressed in FA Youth Cup with a win over Ipswich Under 18s last week (16 December).

Wenham is delighted with Gunter’s development so far.

“I’m really pleased to see him starting games again,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He’s established himself as the top goalkeeper in the under 18s. Of the two keepers we have at that level, he is the standout.

“I actually think he’s the best keeper for his age group in the country.

“That’s further backed up by the fact he is the England goalkeeper for that level as well.

“Hopefully he can carry on impressing this season and he can have another full season of Under 18 football next season.

“The season after that, he could do a year with the Under 23s. By that point he will still only be 18.

“Then in 2023 or 2024, that is the prime time to get him out on loan.

“There is a long way to go before then so hopefully he keeps impressing at Hotspur Way.

“He’s one I’m really excited about.”
