Kieran Maguire lambasts Tottenham as even more ‘legal issues’ loom

Tottenham have been “disappointing” in their response to the attempts to revive Super League – and further “legal issues” are on the cards after a landmark European Court of Justice ruling.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest developments in the bid to relaunch the breakaway competition.

Spurs pulled out of the Super League last April alongside five of their Premier League peers and nine clubs in total amid an unprecedented supporter backlash.

Three clubs – Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid – all remain committed to the project and have established a company, A22 Sports Management, to reboot it under a revised format.

But A22 suffered what has been described by nearly all analysts as a major blow when the European Court of Justice preliminarily ruled that FIFA and UEFA have the right to sanction clubs who sign up for breakaway leagues.

However, A22 claimed in a statement sent to Football Insider on Thursday (15 December) that they expect a positive verdict when the case is decided in full in the spring.

Maguire, who claims Spurs have been at best non-commital in their position towards the Super League since they abandoned the project, insists that this is wishful thinking.

“What we normally see as far as an ECJ verdict is concerned is that they will take into consideration the advocate general’s views,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

Therefore, it would be a reversal of expectation should the ECJ rule in favour of Super League in due course.

The comments that we have seen from A22, who were effectively the cheerleaders employed by Super League clubs, are exactly what you would expect. But I think they are in the minority in terms of their expectation.

I think what we have seen from Spurs to date has been disappointing. They have been either silent or ambivalent apart from their initial decision to back out.

Remember, they are still shareholders in the Super League along with the other five Premier League clubs. Presumably, there are legal issues that still need to be ironed out there.
