Tottenham let down by Aurier after agreement reached – pundit

Noel Whelan has ripped into Serge Aurier after Tottenham announced his departure by mutual consent.

The former Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 28-year-old failed to deliver the standards expected despite his “mountain of ability”.

Tottenham confirmed they had terminated Aurier’s contract on Tuesday (31st August).

He had a year left on his previous terms in north London.

Aurier joined Spurs from PSG back in 2017 but struggled to nail down a regular starting role.

Whelan blasted the 66-cap international for his “mixed” form at Spurs.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It’s never worked out for him. The frustrations have been there from the word go. Some of his football wasn’t what people expected.

“You didn’t get the performances that you’d expect from a quality international player of his standard.

“I think it was a very mixed time at Tottenham for Aurier. Sometimes he’d have a great game but again, consistency wasn’t there. The levels of performances weren’t there.

“That frustrated people because he’s a player that has mountains of ability but never managed to replicate a good performance week in, week out.

“When it doesn’t work out for players, you’ve got to go into the market and you’ve got to strengthen.

“Nuno Espirito Santo realised, with the club, what’s the point of giving a shirt and a number to a player surplus to requirements?”

Aurier played a total of 110 times across all competitions for Tottenham.

However, he did not feature once under Nuno Espirito Santo.
