Tottenham make enquiry for international midfielder with £35m release clause – report

By Harvey Byrne

Tottenham have made “initial enquiries” for Ivory Coast international midfielder Jean-Michael Seri, according to a report.

The Daily Mail has claimed on it’s website that Spurs have pushed forward with their interest in the 25-year-old Nice star.

It is detailed that Italian giants Roma had a £20million bid rejected last week with Nice wanting a fee closer to his £35million release clause.

It is also understood that more talks are planned between both Nice and Roma next week, but Tottenham could throw a spanner into the works with their enquiry.

The north London club will be looking to strengthen their squad further this summer as they plan to embark on another Champions League campaign for the second consecutive season.

Additionally, they will be keen to challenge for the title once more and they may see Seri, who starred for Nice last season as a player who can help them improve.

The 13-time capped international played 39 matches in all competitions for the Ligue 1 side in the last campaign, returning seven goals and nine assists.

He is also contracted to Nice until 2019, which could see his valuation drop in the upcoming windows if he is not sold this summer.

Football Insider verdict:

Seri is an interesting prospect and certainly has a bit about him. However, the central midfield position is arguably Tottenham’s strongest in their squad. The club boasts both Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele already in their ranks and they are two of the best central players in the Premier League. Therefore, if Mauricio Pochettino does want to strengthen the centre of his midfield this summer then he should avoid spending fees such as £35million and certainly must look for cheaper alternatives.
