Tottenham make Son Heung-min transfer decision

Tottenham are planning to keep Son Heung-min at the club beyond the end of the season despite concerns surrounding a frustrating season.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what sources have told him about the 32-year-old’s future.

Ange Postecoglou’s side opted to trigger a one-year extension in the winger’s contract which has extended his stay until the end of the 2025-26 season.

There is a belief that his experience will be valuable as they return to Champions League football following their Europa League final success.

However, there has been plenty of speculation that plans are being made for a future without Son as they continue to strengthen the squad with younger additions.

This comes after former Spurs scout Mick Brown told Football Insider in February that Tottenham want to sign Eberechi Eze as they eye potential replacements for Son.

Meanwhile, former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson told Football Insider that Tottenham will sign a successor for Son, and Mathys Tel was initially viewed as that player.

Tottenham make Son Heung-min exit decision after new concerns

Brown told Football Insider on 9 February that Tottenham staff are concerned about Son, with his performances and injuries casting doubt over his future.

Despite those concerns, he remains an important player under Ange Postecoglou and has picked up 11 goals and 12 assists in 46 appearances this season.

O’Rourke explained that, while it has been a difficult season for the forward, Tottenham are keen to keep hold of their club captain over the summer.

It’s fair to say it’s not been his best season,” he told Football Insider.

“There’s no getting away from that.

“Probably the reason he didn’t start the Europa League final was due to a lack of match fitness.

“Maybe Postecoglou was a bit worried throwing Son into such a big game having not played too many games since his return from injury.

“I still think he’s got a role to play at Tottenham, he’s the club captain and Spurs took up the option in January to extend his contract until 2026.

“With Champions League football on the menu at Tottenham next season, they’ll be keen to keep hold of such an experienced player.”

Cristian Romero exit news emerges after Europa League success

Son is not the only long-serving player to have been linked with a move away from Spurs this summer, as Cristian Romero has been subject to speculation.

Football Insider revealed on 23 May that Romero is expected to leave Tottenham amid growing interest following his Europa League final performance.

As a result, Spurs will enter the transfer market in search of a replacement, with their ambitions boosted by qualification for the Champions League.

This comes after Football Insider exclusively revealed on 21 April that Tottenham could lose Romero this summer as part of a major overhaul of the squad.
