Tottenham news: ‘Abysmal’ Davinson Sanchez slammed by pundit amid ‘inexcusable’ verdict

Paul Robinson has heaped praise on Tottenham defender Cristiano Romero after Saturday’s win over Manchester City.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one said the 23-year-old is the only centre-back at the club show looks “top class”.

Romero starred in a dramatic 3-2 win for Tottenham at Man City on Saturday.

Antonio Conte made four changes to his side for the trip to the Etihad after a dismal 2-0 home loss to Wolves last Sunday.

Eric Dier, Emerson Royal, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Dejan Kulusevski came in for Davinson Sanchez, Matt Doherty, Harry Winks and Lucas Moura.

Robinson suggested Conte was right to drop Sanchez, 25, after an “abysmal” defensive display against Wolves.

“Romero is the only one who looks like a top-class centre-half,” he told Football Insider. “He looks like the real deal.

“The defending for the goals was inexcusable against Wolves.

“You cannot blame Antonio Conte for that result when the team is defending in the way that they are. There is only so much you can put on the manager. The defending was abysmal.

“Davinson Sanchez was nowhere near it. It was not the first time this season he’s been found lacking. He’s been poor for the majority of the season in my opinion.”

Sanchez has made 26 appearances across all competitions this season.

His contract in north London runs until the summer of 2024.
