Tottenham news: Everton may have influenced Hitchen exit after Gold update – pundit

Paul Robinson suspects Everton may have had a hand in Steve Hitchen’s resignation from Tottenham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the Toffees need to address their “awful” recruitment and suggested Hitchen, 45, could be the answer.

On Wednesday (2 February), Spurs announced that Hitchen had left his position as technical performance director with immediate effect.

According to Football.London’s Alasdair Gold (6 February), Antonio Conte enjoyed working with Hitchen and was “genuinely saddened” by his exit.

The Telegraph‘s Matt Law has claimed (2 February) Everton want to speak to Hitchen about potentially succeeding Marcel Brands as their director of football.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his reaction to Hitchen’s exit, Robinson said: “I don’t know what has gone on behind the scenes.

“One thing it will do is allow Conte to have a little bit more say over the comings and goings at the club. He will be able to put his own stamp on things.

“I suspect it may be a case of Steve wanted to look elsewhere. It really was one that came out of the blue.

“Perhaps Everton’s interest had something to do with it. I suspect it has. That is a situation that Everton need to address. Their recruitment has been awful. Somebody like Steve would fit the bill for them.”

Hitchen was a scout at Tottenham between 2005 and 2010.

He returned to the club in a more senior role in 2017.

In other news, a pundit has predicted Tottenham could complete a ‘shock’ move for a Chelsea star after an update.
