Tottenham news: Ex-Premier League official demands radical change as Harry Kane reaps rewards

Keith Hackett has called for the handball law to be changed after Tottenham striker Harry Kane converted a contentious penalty for England.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League and Fifa official suggested the rules be amended to “what is clearly deliberate” as opposed to what is unnatural.

Switzerland’s Steven Zuber was not initially penalised after England’s Marc Guehi headed onto his arm.

However, as shown on Sky Sports (26 March), referee Andreas Ekberg reversed his decision after a VAR review.

Harry Kane converted for what was his 49th international goal – only Wayne Rooney has more for the Three Lions.

When asked for his assessment of the decision, Hackett told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs: “In terms of the law, it is a penalty kick.

“But it highlights for me the nonsense of the handball law. The player who has allegedly handled it had his back to the ball.

“What it in an unnatural position? It was raised but I’m not sure if it was unnatural. This is the dilemma the handball rule has created.

“Look, it is the correct decision in law but the old argument is, we need to get back to what is clearly deliberate. That would be a better way of doing it for me.

“The referee in this case has given a handball because he thinks the arm is in an unnatural position but it is a dilemma. If the rules were up to me, that would not have been a penalty kick.”
