Tottenham news: Expert issues ‘massive’ Matt Doherty injury claim – ‘there have been whispers’

Tottenham have been dealt a “massive blow” after the season-ending injury to Matt Doherty, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 30-year-old had banished “whispers” surrounding his Spurs future after his “brilliant” recent form.

According to football.london’s Alasdair Gold (10 April), Doherty will miss the rest of this season with a knee injury after limping off in the first half of Tottenham’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday (9 April).

The Republic of Ireland international had been in fine form after his resurgence under Antonio Conte.

He has notched two goals and four assists since New Year’s Day.

Doherty failed to start a league game this season prior to the Italian’s appointment in November 2021 – leading to speculation about his future.

Whelan claimed the former Wolves man had shown “promise” at long last – prior to this injury blow.

“He was one of the most improved players for Tottenham in the last couple of months,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Doherty was finally showing the promise that Spurs thought they had bought and were expecting to have.

“There have been whispers over his future at the club. However, he looked to have put those question marks to bed with some brilliant performances. He was up for the fight.

“This is a massive blow for Tottenham. His role on the left and the right looked to be exactly what Conte was after.”

Tottenham paid Wolves a reported £14.7million fee for Doherty in the summer of 2020.

He made just 13 starts for the north London side last season.
