Tottenham news: Expert salutes ‘phenomenal’ Cristian Romero development after what he’s seen

Cristian Romero is the best centre-back at Tottenham and his presence is bringing the best out of his teammates, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hailed the 24-year-old’s “phenomenal” performance in the 5-1 win over Newcastle on Sunday (3 April).

As per WhoScored, Romero notched six tackles during the win – the most of any player – as well as a block and a clearance.

The Argentina international also impressed with the ball at his feet, recording a pass success rate of 93.9%, completing the most dribbles of any Tottenham player (two), and having the second-most touches (94).

Romero returned to the Conte’s side in early February after almost three months on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

Whelan insisted keeping the former Atalanta man fit will be key for Tottenham’s pursuit of a top-four finish.

“He was a really big miss when he was out, and I think Conte knew that,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He’s probably the best centre-half they have. With Dier next to him, I think they work extremely well together.

“He is one of these players who can bring the best out of whoever is next to him.

“Romero is highly important to the way Tottenham play, and he didn’t put a foot wrong on Sunday – he was phenomenal. He won every battle, his passing was spot on – and you could see what a quality influence he is.

“It’s so important that he stays fit for this run-in now.”
