Tottenham news: ‘Huge’ Emerson Royal claim issued after Sky update – pundit

Alan Hutton has insisted Emerson Royal has a “huge chance” to save his Tottenham career after Matt Doherty’s serious injury blow.

The former Spurs defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the 23-year-old still has to “prove a lot of people wrong” if he is to remain in north London past the summer.

As reported by Sky Sports on Monday (11 April), Doherty faces up to 12 weeks on the sidelines after suffering a ruptured medial collateral ligament in his knee in the win over Aston Villa.

The injury means the Republic of Ireland international will miss the rest of the season.

As reported by the Sun last month (8 April), Tottenham are open to offers for Emerson Royal a year after his arrival from Barcelona.

However, with right-back rivals Doherty and Japhet Tanganga both out, Hutton admitted the Brazilian has a chance to turn his own fortunes around.

“It’s a huge chance for him,” Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“He’s been given a lot of opportunities and I’m still to be convinced if I’m totally honest. I’ve watched him quite a bit now.

“Before he signed, I was looking at his clips, I was doing my homework and research on him. He was flying forward, putting balls in the box and he was making things happen.

“I understand he’s coming into a league which is much tougher. He’s not quite been able to do that.

“Defensively, there are still question marks. He’s going to have to go and prove a lot of people and the doubters wrong at the moment.”

Emerson has made 34 appearances for Tottenham since his summer move.

Meanwhile, Doherty had been playing as a left wing-back when he suffered the injury.
