Tottenham news: Oliver Skipp tipped to agree ‘bumper deal’ as details emerge
Noel Whelan has backed Oliver Skipp for a new Tottenham contract after impressing Antonio Conte in his breakthrough season.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 21-year-old has earned the trust of the Italian through his performances this term.
As per football.london (17 March), talks between Tottenham and Skipp over a “bumper new deal” are close to “a positive conclusion” – with his current deal set to expire in 2024.
The Athletic detailed the effectiveness of the midfielder on Friday (18 March), revealing Spurs win an extra point per game on average when the youngster starts.
Tottenham have won 10 of the 14 games Skipp has started this term (2.2 points per game), but have won just five of the other 14 without him in the starting eleven (1.2 points per game).
Whelan hailed the 21-year-old, who has been sidelined through injury since early February.
“We know the quality that he possesses,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.
“He’s one of the players to impress Antonio Conte as soon as he came into the club.
“There’s been no real question marks about him – he’s one of those players that the manager trusts.
“He’s got real physicality and he can control the midfield really well.
“Again, you’re looking at these types of players for longevity and for the future – and he’s one of the best at Tottenham in terms of controlling a game.

“The fans seem to absolutely love him as well, which says everything about a player.
“They’re building, very much like Arsenal – keeping hold of these academy players who have been so important for them in recent years.”
