Tottenham news: Pundit digs at ‘whinging’ Steven Bergwijn as quotes emerge – ‘I don’t like it’

Noel Whelan has claimed Tottenham star Steven Bergwijn should have approached Antonio Conte privately instead of “making noises” about a potential exit publicly.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 24-year-old is not good enough to gazump first-choice trio Harry Kane, Heung-min Son, and Dejan Kulusevski in the pecking order.

Speaking to Dutch outlet AD (5 June), Bergwijn claimed he was “hardly looked at” by Conte in the final months of the 2021-22 season.

The former PSV Eindhoven star confirmed that he wants to “leave Spurs now, that’s for sure.”

According to the Daily Mail (5 June), Everton are racing Ajax for Bergwijn’s signature – with the Dutch club already seeing a £17million offer rebuffed by Tottenham.

The winger started just four league games during the 2021-22 season.

Whelan accepted that “player power” means Bergwijn will likely get his wish this summer.

“It’s a tough ask getting into that front three,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Conte has made his mind up. Sometimes players just aren’t in the thoughts of managers – it’s not because he doesn’t like him as a person.

“He’s just got better players in front of him in the side.

“Bergwijn is pushing for a move now, he will know that he isn’t getting in that side ahead of Son or Kane.

“I don’t like the fact that he’s coming out and making noises about it.

I’d rather he sit down with the manager and do things the right way.

“The player power these days means if you whinge enough, you get your move.”
