Tottenham news: Pundit fears ‘another Harry Kane situation’ after Conte transfer confession

Tottenham could have “another Harry Kane situation” on their hands with Antonio Conte, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 52-year-old could look to leave Spurs if he is not given the backing of the board.

Speaking to Sky Sports Italy on Wednesday (16 February), Conte admitted he has “realised” the club’s “vision” is to sign and develop younger players.

The Italian manager insisted clubs need “a lot of experience” to “be competitive more quickly”.

As such, he confessed it will take a “lot of patience” to reach the desired levels with Spurs’ current strategy.

Whelan suggested Spurs will have made “promises” to Conte about becoming a “winning team”.

He insisted the former Inter Milan boss could look to leave if Spurs remain uncompetitive.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “If he’s not getting the backing and the promises that have been given to him don’t come to fruition, there’s no doubt he won’t stay too long.

“He’ll probably make it very public why he’s left, very much like the Harry Kane scenario.

“There was a promise, a handshake, and it never came true. Let’s hope that this is not another Harry Kane situation with Conte.

“He’s one of the best managers in the world, he is a serial winner. Conte will have only joined that club after certain promises. Promises that he can turn them into a winning team.”

Spurs made two new signings during January in Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski.

They allowed Bryan Gil, Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso to leave on loan, while Dele Alli joined Everton permanently.
