Eric Dier: Pundit fears for Tottenham star after confirmed news – ‘it doesn’t bode well’

Paul Robinson fears the ship has sailed on Eric Dier’s England career despite his “great” form for Tottenham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the 28-year-old’s absence from Gareth Southgate’s squad speaks volumes.

On Thursday (17 March), England confirmed their squad for upcoming friendlies against Switzerland and Cote d’Ivoire.

Dier was not named in the 25-man list with 21-year-old Marc Guehi preferred by Southgate.

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has lavished praise on Dier since his arrival in November and the centre-half has repaid the faith with consistent displays.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his reaction to Dier’s omission from the Three Lions squad, Robinson said:

“Dier is playing the best he ever has, so if he is not getting in the squad it is because players are better than him. It doesn’t bode well for his future chances.

“When you look at the top four sides, he doesn’t get into any of those teams as a centre-half.

“He has come on a lot this year. He has probably had his best season for the club. I don’t think he’s world class though. He’s not top level.

“When you look at the players England have got in that position, you wouldn’t put him in front of them despite the fact he’s had a great season. The fact that he is being overlook begs the question over whether he can get back in.”
