Tottenham news: Pundit issues ‘honest’ verdict on controversy after Harry Kane ‘reaction’

Paul Robinson has pointed to the shortfalls of VAR after Tottenham striker Harry Kane converted a contentious penalty for England.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one said VAR “will never, ever clear up” subjective incidents like handballs.

Switzerland midfielder Steven Zuber was not initially penalised after England’s Marc Guehi headed onto his arm at Wembley.

However, as shown on Sky Sports (26 March), England captain Harry Kane sprinted over to the referee to plead his side’s case for a penalty and after a VAR review referee Andreas Ekberg reversed his decision.

Kane converted for what was his 49th goal the Three lions – only Wayne Rooney has netted more.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the controversial decision, Robinson said: “Look, it was one of those grey area ones.

“VAR was brought in for clear and obvious errors but let’s be honest, some decisions are down to opinion. That was the perfect example. Some people think that it was a penalty and others don’t.

“VAR will never, ever clear up those incidents because they are subjective. It is a grey area.

“It was one of those penalties that you appeal for, so I understand Kane’s reaction. If it’s for you but if it’s against you, you feel hard done. Switzerland will feel harshly done by though I’m sure. It could have gone either way.”
