Tottenham news: Pundit salutes ‘exceptional’ Son Heung-min as ‘incredible’ new details emerge
Noel Whelan has claimed Tottenham star Son Heung-min is among “the best finishers in the world” after his “incredible” display against West Ham.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 29-year-old is matching teammate Harry Kane “step-by-step” at present.
Son claimed his 12th and 13th league goals of the season with aplomb as Tottenham defeated rivals West Ham 3-1 on Sunday (20 March).
The South Korea international moved up to second in the Premier League scoring charts – level with Liverpool star Diogo Jota.
As per FBRef, only Leicester’s Jamie Vardy has registered more goals per shot this term among the top ten goalscorers (0.26 goals per shot vs Son’s 0.21).
Whelan claimed the forward’s “exceptional” first touch sets him apart from the rest.
“Son, in front of goal, is just clinical – it’s incredible,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“He’s got to be up there among the best finishers in the Premier League – if not the world.
“His second goal on Sunday proved that. It’s by no means an easy chance even though he is one-on-one, it’s very easy to change your mind.
“His first touch is exceptional. It’s just so smooth, and it always gives him the best possible chance of putting the ball in the back of the net.
“Harry Kane is up there in terms of finishers – but Son is matching him step-by-step at the moment.”
Son has notched 14 goals and seven assists across 36 appearances in all competitions this term.

The forward has just over three years remaining on his Tottenham deal after signing fresh terms last year (2021).
Antonio Conte’s side sit fifth in the Premier League following Sunday’s win.
