Tottenham news: Stefan Borson drops transfer bombshell

Tottenham could struggle to sign new players in the January transfer window due to their lack of Champions League football this season.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the teams Spurs would likely want to agree deals with are unlikely to be in a rush to sell their stars this month.

Tottenham have endured a difficult first half of the season as they currently sit 11th in the Premier League table after 19 games.

Ange Postecoglou admitted (via The Times) the chances of strengthening his side in January will be hindered by the revamped Champions League.

The league phase of the competition will not end until the final week of this month, with two games still to be played over the coming weeks.

Spurs will also play European matches against Hoffenheim and Elfsborg in January as they look to secure their place in the knockout rounds of the Europa League.

Tottenham’s board came under fire recently when star defender Cristian Romero criticised the club’s lack of spending.

Borson admitted it could be a “very tough” window for Spurs.

He told Football Insider: “It’s going to be hard for Spurs because they have got no Champions League.

“It’s going to be a very tough window.

“The Premier League teams have got money and the French teams particularly would probably like that money.

“The German teams are probably not in as much of a rush before the summer, likewise for Italy. Spain is pretty much a mix.

“The clubs that you would probably want to sign from are not in dire need to sell, so I think it’s going to be a really hard market for the likes of Spurs.

“The people that are probably best-placed to sign players are the teams that are prepared to take loans from teams like Chelsea.”
