Dr Dan: Tottenham on brink of £12m-plus blow after official statement

Tottenham could lose out on over £12million if they are prevented from qualifying for the Europa Conference League last 16.

So says finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Spurs’ Covid crisis and its impact on the club’s balance sheet.

Tottenham were forced to postpone their final Conference League group stage game against Rennes after an outbreak among players and staff.

Antonio Conte’s side needed to win to make the first knockout round of Europe’s third-tier club competition.

Uefa have since confirmed that Spurs will be unable to play the Rennes match at their home stadium in North London.

But they were provisionally included in the last-16 draw, which will pit either themselves or Vitesse against Rapid Vienna.

The club released a statement yesterday (13 December) to explain that their fate is now in the hands of the Uefa Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body.

Plumley explained that lost matchday income from the Rennes fixture as well as prize money means that £12m is on the line for Spurs.

“Spurs generally average around £3m to £3.5m per home match in the last couple of seasons,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“That depends on the quality of opposition and the competition, so you would expect that to be a little bit lower in the Conference League.

“So it would maybe be closer to £2.5m for the Rennes match because you wouldn’t have got a big attendance.

“In more general terms, the maximum amount of prize money is just under £13m.

They got around £3.5m in the group stage, so that’s already secured. So we’re talking about £12m total.

Spurs’ Premier League clash with Brighton last weekend was postponed following the Covid outbreak.

Thursday’s (16 December) meeting with Leicester City is also a major doubt.
