Revealed: Tottenham on brink of £87m nosedive as crisis deepens
Tottenham revenue could fall by nearly £87million if they fail to qualify for European competition this term, Football Insider analysis shows.
Spurs were thumped 6-1 by Newcastle United last Sunday (23 April), leaving them six points behind the Magpies in the race for the top four having played one extra match.
That has led to the sacking of acting head coach Christian Stellini, who took the job on an interim basis after Antonio Conte was given the boot less than a month ago.
Both Liverpool and Aston Villa will overtake the Norther Londoners – who will be under the stewardship of Ryan Mason for the rest of the season – if they win their matches before Spurs take on Man United on Thursday (27 April).
That would leave them 7th in the league, not only outside of Champions League spots but the Europa and Conference League ones as well.
Research conducted by this site using Uefa’s distribution data shows that Spurs earned £57.4m from their exploits in the Champions League this season.
Around £40m of that figure was banked before a ball was kicked in the 2022-23 European campaign.
The remaining cash was earned in prize money as Tottenham reached the last 16, where they were beaten 1-0 over two legs by AC Milan.
That is all revenue that will be lost in 2023-24 should Spurs, who have now won just one of their last five matches, fail to arrest their slide on the pitch.
There will also be commercial penalties, with most prominent sponsors of elite clubs including step-down clauses in the event of failure to secure European qualification.
It is conservatively estimated that could knock another £10m off Spurs’ revenue for the 2023-24 campaign.
Spurs are also capable of earning north of £6m per home game on European nights, meaning a further £18m would be lost if they fail to qualify.
That takes the total that could be wiped off the profit and loss account in 2023-24 compared to this season to around £87m.
The club’s revenue for 2021-22, when they were knocked out of the Europa Conference League at the group stage, was £444m.
