Tottenham on course to sign Djed Spence replacement in January as source reveals double deal expected – expert
Paul Robinson has claimed Tottenham could sign another right wing-back with Antonio Conte “clearly not happy” with his options at present.
The former Spurs and England goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested a move for a Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg back-up could be another area which interests the Italian.
Speaking after Tottenham’s 2-1 loss against Newcastle on Sunday (23 October) and quoted by the BBC, Conte insisted he needs “time, patience and money” to make his side contenders.
He has previously claimed he needs two more transfer windows in order to turn Spurs into title contenders.
Right wing-back has been a problematic area for Conte this season, with Djed Spence, Emerson Royal, and Matt Doherty all failing to nail down a starting berth.
Spence, who signed in the summer window for £20million, is yet to start a game for the Lilywhites.
Robinson insisted it will be “interesting” to “watch this space” about the England Under-21’s future.
Football Insider has learned from a Spurs source that the club are expected to sign a replacement for Spence in January and loan him out.
He told Football Insider: “Conte’s got a good side.
“He’s just very unlucky to have Kulusevski and Richarlison both injured at the same time.
“At right-wing back – we’re just not sure what’s going on with Djed Spence. It’ll be interesting to watch this space to see what happens there.
“Wing-back is an area that he’s clearly not 100% happy with – apart from Perisic, who can’t start every game.
“We’ve seen Doherty, Sessegnon, Emerson Royal – they’ve all been rotated in and out.
“He’s clearly not happy.

“I think right wing-back is an area he’ll look at first.
“Look at the squad depth. You take Hojbjerg out of that midfield, and they didn’t look anything like the same side. He’s a lynchpin.”
