Tottenham have opened negotiations with Barcelona in a bid to sign Andre Gomes, according to a report.
Italian news outlet CalcioMercato claims that Spurs are in discussions with the La Liga giants about Gomes, 24, but that could open up Mousa Dembele to leave North London, with the Belgium international said to fancy the idea of joining AC Milan.
Gomes has struggled to break into the first-team at the Nou Camp this season and the Sun have previously reported that Barca valued the midfield maestro at £20million, however he could also be available for loan.
The Portugal international, who can play anywhere in the midfield and even on the left wing, has made 17 appearances across all competitions this term, but has started just two games in La Liga.
Dembele, 30, has been key to Tottenham in the past few campaigns and is one of the more experienced members of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.
The former Fulham ace has struggled with injuries this season but has still made 21 appearances across all competitions.
Football Insider verdict
Spurs need to be really careful about replacing Dembele. Pochettino has a fairly youthful squad on his hands and instead of looking to replace the Belgian midfielder, he should be finding a way to harness his experience. The 30-year-old has shown no signs of slowing down and is still as vital as ever to Tottenham’s first-team. Gomes would be a decent replacement but he has not played much football this season and could take a while to get up to full speed in the Premier League. Pochettino is best off trying to get one or two more seasons out of Dembele and instead look at a youngster who could be nurtured by the ex-Fulham ace.
In other Tottenham news, Spurs have opened talks over potentially handing this first-team ace a £100,000-a-week deal.
