Tottenham player ratings v Southampton: International duo struggle in 5/10 displays
Goalkeeper and defenders
Michel Vorm – 7: Starting this weekend as a result of Hugo Lloris’ illness, the Dutch veteran did very little wrong throughout the game. He commanded his box well, made brave but sensible decisions to deny the Saints and was an effective shot stopper. Had no chance with Sanchez’s own goal.
Serge Aurier – 6: The Ivory Coast international is enjoying a run in the starting XI but there are still question marks over his defensive ability. There are no doubts he can be a potent threat up the right flank, but too many times he was caught out by the pace and skill of Southampton’s wingers. The cross for the opening goal came from his wing, so he has to take some blame.
Davinson Sanchez – 5: A nervy performance in the opening minutes culminated in the own goal from the summer signing. It was a needless lunge borne out of his earlier frustrations, and he failed to regain his usual composure throughout. Not the Columbian international’s finest 90 minutes.
Jan Vertonghen – 7: Unlike his counterpart at the heart of defence, Vertonghen looked a solid figure at the back, marshalling his counterparts expertly, especially when trying to implement the offside trap.
Ben Davies – 7: Southampton rarely threatened the Welsh international down the left flank, while he made only a few ventures into the Saints’ half. However he played a crucial role in securing the equaliser, delivering an inch perfect ball from a corner for Kane to head home.
