As with the whole defence, Alderweireld can say that he managed to keep some of Europe’s top attackers quiet for the majority of the match.
He demonstrated his aerial dominance, commanding the box at set pieces, but was caught out by the pace of the Real Madrid down the flanks on occasion.
Still, the way he jostled and harried the opposition meant they found clear cut opportunities at a premium and he should be happy with his night’s work.
