Tottenham players were ‘furious’ after behind-the-scenes decision – Borson
Tottenham’s players will have been furious after they were sent on a post-season tour to Australia at the end of the last campaign.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the tour will have only been worth between £1-2million to the club.
The Telegraph revealed on 26 September Tottenham will not embark on another money-spinning post-season tour next summer.
Spurs travelled to Australia to take on Newcastle United just days after the end of the 2023-24 campaign.
Tottenham increased their commercial revenue from £183.5million to £227.7million in their reports for the 2022-23 season.
Tottenham to keep lucrative overseas pre-season friendlies
But Borson insisted only the end-of-season tour is likely to go as overseas pre-season friendlies have become too financially important to scrap.
He told Football Insider: “I think those are the games that will go from the noise, especially when they are playing in the Europa League and there are so many games.
“I think the end-of-season friendlies are going to go rather than the pre-season friendlies.
“I think the pre-season friendlies are now very important from a profit and loss perspective.
“They are worth upwards of £10million to some of these clubs, so they are not going anywhere.
“If you look at the end of season one they went on with Newcastle last season, what must it have been worth? Maybe £1-2million to them.

“Obviously, it’s good money, but the players were furious about it.
“Sometimes you have just got to protect the players I think, so I’m not surprised that they have decided a post-season set of friendlies is not a good idea.
“You just can that and let the players have another week off.”
