Tottenham record smashed by ‘sensational’ £120m+ news – Todd Boehly is behind it, says Kieran Maguire

Chelsea chief Todd Boehly is responsible for Brighton smashing the Premier League profit record previously held by Tottenham.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that the figures from Brighton’s latest accounts are “sensational”.

Brighton published their 2022-23 accounts last Tuesday (2 April) revealing a club-record turnover of £204.5million and a Premier League record of £122.8million in profit.

Tottenham previously held the record with a profit of £113million in their 2017-18 accounts.

Brighton’s figures do not include the record transfer fee of £115million paid by Chelsea for Moises Caicedo – that will be attributed to their 23-24 accounts.

However, Chelsea still made major contributions to Brighton’s profit with a £60million fee paid for Marc Cucurella and over £20million in compensation paid to appoint Graham Potter.

Fees for Alexis Mac Allister and Yves Bissouma also made significant contributions to Brighton’s profit.

Maguire explained that Brighton actually made a loss without player sales, so Boehly is responsible for the club’s huge profits.

The headline numbers are sensational – there’s no doubt about that,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

But if you strip out the player sales and also the compensation paid for Graham Potter, Brighton actually made a loss of around £16million.

So you’ve got to admire the club’s player trading model.

I think everybody would acknowledge that’s only a short-term benefit.

Brighton

You can’t expect to continue that infinitely going forward.

Brighton will say it’s a team effort, but I have got to give all of the credit for those profits to one man and one man only – and that’s Todd Boehly.
