Kieran Maguire salutes Levy as Tottenham secure ‘last-minute’ seven-figure windfall
The decision Tottenham made to “future-proof” their stadium during its construction earned them an unexpected Boxing Day day bonus.
So says finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the £1million windfall Spurs sealed on 26 December.
Liverpool were due to play Leeds United on Boxing Day but the game was called off three days beforehand, leaving broadcaster BT at a loose end.
BT instead decided to air Spurs’ clash with Crystal Palace, which the home side won 3-0.
BT were only able to pivot from Liverpool to London at short notice because of Spurs’ built-in media amenities, per The Sun on Tuesday (28 December).
That earned both Spurs and Palace a £1m bonus in the form of a facility fee.
Maguire hailed the level of forethought from co-owner and chairman Daniel Levy when the stadium was built between 2016 and 2019.
“Spurs tried to future-proof the stadium during the design period,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.
“This is another example of that. From a broadcaster’s point of view, it gives them a huge amount of flexibility, especially at the last minute.
“It wouldn’t be the driving force when you’re choosing which match to air, it will work in your favour.
“Because it is easy to set up, it might just sway that person making that fifth or sixth pick to be broadcast that weekend.
“The big fixtures are going to be chosen anyway but this would be a consideration. You have to credit Daniel Levy for that.”

Spurs followed up their 3-0 win over Palace with a 1-1 draw away at Southampton.
Antonio Conte’s side face 17th-place Watford tomorrow (1 January).
