Tottenham sending scouts on mission to watch Europe’s brightest talents this summer – report

By Harvey Byrne

Tottenham are taking this summer’s European Under-21 Championships seriously as they are sending four scouts to the tournament, according to a report.

The Daily Mail has reported on Monday that a number of English Premier League clubs have snubbed the tournament in Poland, including Liverpool and Manchester United.

However, Spurs are one of just four Premier League clubs to send as many as four of their scouting staff to watch some of Europe’s brightest talents.

Fellow side Southampton, who are also famed for handing youth an opportunity have sent four as well, while rivals Arsenal and Watford have also sent a quartet of scouts on the mission.

A number of emerging stars have been selected by their countries, including Schalke and Germany attacker Max Meyer, Portugal and Bayern Munich midfielder Renato Sanches and Italy and AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

It will be an opportunity for Tottenahm staff to get a better look at those bright prospects, while Spurs will also be hoping to have a better summer in terms of their own recruitment than last year’s.

The north London club brought in four senior players last summer, but each of Moussa Sissoko, Vincent Janssen and Georges Kevin-N’Koudou failed to make an impact for Mauricio Pochettino runners-up.

The Championships run from Friday June 16 to June 30.

Football Insider verdict:

Tottenham have very much made the correct decision in not ignoring this summer’s tournament. Clubs like Manchester United may feel that they know enough about the likes of Sanches and Donnarumma. However, there could be an unknown gem in the tournament, which would not be too much of a surprise. Spurs are also one of Europe’s big hitters now and with the offer of Champions League football it means they now have a pick of the bunch in a way. Tottenham fans will also be keen to see the club bring in another of Europe’s brightest young talents alongside both Dele Alli and Harry Kane. Additionally, this move only proves that Pochettino has the long-term interest of the club.
