Major Tottenham scare as key first teamer in a knee brace – report
By Harry Sykes
Tottenham are sweating on the fitness of Danny Rose after he left Etihad Stadium in a knee brace on Saturday night, according to a report.
The Evening Standard claim the Spurs defender is being assessed by the club’s medical staff after sustaining the problem in the thrilling 2-2 draw against Manchester City.
Rose completed the full 90 minutes against Pep Guardiola’s side, initially in a wing-back role before switching to his regular left-back position when Mauricio Pochettino switched to a flat back four at half-time.
The Evening Standard report that Rose is a now major doubt for Tottenham’s FA Cup fourth-round clash against Wycombe on Saturday.
His defensive colleague Toby Alderweireld is also unlikely to be risked against the League Two outfit after withdrawing midway through the second half against City with a tight hamstring amid fears of a six-week injury lay-off.
Despite the major scare, it is said that Spurs are “optimistic” neither injury is serious although they were due to be monitored during the club’s warm-weather training trip to Barcelona.
Pochettino’s side were given the day off on Sunday before flying to the Spanish city, where they will remain until Wednesday.
Tottenham will be hoping that key man Rose will return to full fitness for their next Premier League clash against Sunderland on Tuesday of next week.
The London giants are already without Jan Vertonghen for six weeks after he damaged ankle ligaments.
Football Insider verdict:
Pochettino does not need any reminding about the importance of Rose, who has developed beyond recognition under the Argentine in the past two seasons. Solid in defence and thrilling on the overlap when Spurs pour forward, the England international has matured into one of the best left-backs in the Premier League, if not the standout operator. They can ill afford to lose him for any length of time.
