Tottenham slammed over Jack Grealish transfer response

Tottenham have been criticised for their approach to Man City outcast Jack Grealish as Thomas Frank aims to bolster his attack this summer.

Grealish is set to depart Man City ahead of the new season following a poor 2024/25 campaign that saw him struggle to nail down a spot in Pep Guardiola’s starting eleven.

The 29-year-old made just seven Premier League starts last term, and with a move away beckoning, Football Insider reported in June that Everton and Newcastle United were leading the race for Grealish’s services.

Man City chiefs are considering loaning Grealish out due to his high wages, and the Citizens want his hefty £300,000 weekly earnings covered in full by any team that takes him for the upcoming campaign.

Former scout Mick Brown revealed to Football Insider last month that Tottenham have set their sights on signing Grealish alongside other interested sides, but a deal now looks unlikely and they have been slammed for their response to a potential move.

Troy Deeney blasts ‘daft’ Tottenham as Grealish move dismissed

James Maddison is set to miss the majority of the new season after suffering an ACL injury [The Guardian], but despite Spurs needing more attackers, talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent Alex Crook revealed live on air on Friday (8 August) that the North London outfit have distanced themselves from links to Grealish.

Former Watford striker Troy Deeney replied to Crook’s statement by blasting Spurs and their transfer plans, insisting that the 29-year-would be a good signing, saying: “I still think [Tottenham] is a perfect landing spot for Jack Grealish, personally. I think it’s a wonderful landing spot.

“For whatever people want to talk about Jack, he’s been at [Manchester] City, he’s used to winning, he knows the level, knows the standard, and he is an upgrade on everything that they have got there. The fact that they are playing it down, to me, is daft.”

Grealish to struggle to find a move amid Man City wage demands

Football Insider verdict

It seems like an almost foregone conclusion that Grealish will be on his way out of the Etihad Stadium this summer, and this latest reveal will come as a major blow to both him and the Toffees, with a deal seemingly set to progress well, financials aside.

The 29-year-old’s time under Guardiola has been one of both ups and downs over the years, but his last season certainly included more of the latter as he failed to make any sort of impact in either the Premier League or Champions League while City suffered a surprising downfall.

Grealish still has a lot to offer, though, as he enters what should be his prime as a player, but talkSPORT‘s (6 August) recent report claiming that Man City want his weekly wages covered in full for 2025/26 is likely set to deny him of the move he wants.

Football Insider revealed in June that Grealish is “excited” about a potential move to Everton, yet covering £300,000-a-week will clearly not be viable for the Toffees, despite their recent investment.

Spurs also seem unlikely to want to pay such a hefty figure going forward, and so Grealish may well be stuck at the Etihad Stadium for the foreseeable future.
