Tottenham star makes contract admission, fans will be disappointed
By Harvey Byrne
Tottenham’s centre-back star Toby Alderweireld has made the admission that there have been no developments on a new contract at the club with his current one set to expire in 2020.
The 28-year-old Belgium international made the switch to north London in the summer of 2015, agreeing a five-year deal from La Liga club Atletico Madrid.
He was not included in the long list of Spurs players that signed new deals last summer having only joined a year prior, but it is believed that his current deal has a clause that can see him leave for a fee of just £25million in 2019.
Tottenham are understandably keen to eradicate that clause given Alderweireld’s success since joining, but the defender has told that there is “no news” on him agreeing a new deal at the club.
“No news that I know of so nothing…zero,” told Alderweireld when asked about his contract situation, as quoted by the Sky Sports News website.
Alderweireld is one of many stars in the Tottenham team and his partnership alongside Belgium compatriot Jan Vertonghen has ensured that statistically Spurs boast the best defence in the Premier League.
Fans will now be keen to see the club keep hold of their key player and they will be disappointed that the Premier League runners-up aren’t moving swiftly, but the north London club may have other ideas with Alderweireld set to hit 30 in 2019.
Tottenham have gained a recent reputation for progressing young players in their team and they may wait to see what Alderweireld is performing like in two years time before looking to take the clause out of his deal.
In other Tottenham news, Mauricio Pochettino has sent this message to the fans about the club’s summer transfer dealings.
