Tottenham tipped for ‘£150m’ transfer spend amid ‘phenomenal’ Harry Kane verdict – pundit
Tottenham must qualify for the Champions League and spend £150million in the summer window in order to keep Harry Kane at the club, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 28-year-old will “desperately want to win trophies”.
Kane, who has been extensively linked with Man United in recent weeks, is out of contract in June 2024.
The forward’s spectacular form has helped Tottenham leapfrog their Champions League rivals to go fourth in the Premier League ahead of the run-in.
The England captain has notched seven goals and four assists in Spurs’ last eight league games.
Whelan suggested Tottenham must “go big” in the transfer market in order to match the ambition of Kane and serial winner Antonio Conte.
“If you get in the Champions League then that improves the chances of keeping a player like Harry Kane,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“He’s still under contract and Conte won’t want him to go, but at the same time – he’s a player who will desperately want to win trophies.
“No player as talented as him will want to finish his career without something in the cabinet.
“If they don’t get in the Champions League, Tottenham have got to assess it and really consider letting him go – because he’s been a phenomenal servant to the club.
“Conte has been the perfect manager for him, but they’ve got to go big in the transfer market now and match the ambition he and Kane will demand.
“You’re talking at least £150million to make them contenders.”

Kane is yet to lift a major honour with Tottenham.
That is despite him netting 243 goals for the club.
