Tottenham tipped to sell Doherty and Alli as top-level talks confirmed today – pundit

Noel Whelan has tipped Tottenham to offload Matt Doherty with Antonio Conte set to hold top-level talks over potential transfers.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 29-year-old is very much in the firing line after a “really disappointing” spell at Spurs so far.

As quoted by Sky Sports on Saturday (1 January), Conte confirmed he is to discuss the club’s transfer plans with Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici after fully evaluating his squad since taking charge.

He insisted he is now “100 per cent” certain over what is needed in terms of his squad and recruitment.

Whelan insisted Doherty would be one player who could leave Tottenham.

Asked who he thought would be sweating over their futures after Conte’s reveal, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Oh my God, where can we go with this one? I think Doherty.

“You look at the people who have been on the fringes and those who have come into the club and not shone. Dele Alli, there’s still a question mark, isn’t there?

“Is one good game enough for him to be staying at Tottenham? He’s still really young and we have seen a lot more desire and quality in his game than we’ve seen in two years.

“There could be an opportunity there but one game will not change the mind of Conte. You need consistency to the end of the season.

“But Doherty is one for me that just hasn’t done it and has been really disappointing. It’s not worked, it just hasn’t worked.”

Doherty, who joined Spurs in 2020, has started twice in five appearances under Conte.

However, his three Premier League appearances all came off the bench.
