Tottenham tipped to sign ‘world-class’ Hojbjerg ally after talks reveal via Sky – pundit

Alex McLeish has tipped Tottenham to sign a “world-class” centre-back and midfielder to bolster the starting XI this month.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Lilywhites would look to strengthen the “spine” of their side under Antonio Conte.

Speaking to Sky Sports on Saturday (1 January), Conte confirmed he was planning talks over transfers with Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy after evaluating his squad.

Conte insisted he is now “100 per cent” in regards to the squad and said new signings are needed “for sure”.

McLeish suggested central reinforcements, specifically in defence and midfield, would be the priority.

Asked where he thought Spurs need to strengthen, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I always thought down the spine for Spurs.

“The centre-backs are maybe on the wain a wee bit. Okay, there’ a resurgence at the moment with Conte coming in.

“I feel they would be looking to go for a world-class centre-half and in the centre of midfield.

“I know Hojbjerg is there. He’s a very capable player but I do see Spurs being even better if they can employ some world-class players.”

Hojbjerg has been a mainstay in the midfield for Spurs this season.

The Denmark international has featured in all but one of Conte’s games in charge.

Spurs also have Harry Winks, Oliver Skipp, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele to call upon in central midfield.

Meanwhile, Conte has no fewer than four senior centre-backs on the books at present.
