Tottenham tipped to U-turn over selling Winks after update via Sky – pundit

Tottenham could make a U-turn over selling Harry Winks if he isn’t happy with his game time, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 25-year-old will hold “real, honest conversations” with Spurs boss Antonio Conte if he can’t nail down a starting berth.

Winks has made three league starts for Tottenham since the arrival of Conte in November, after playing just 61 Premier League minutes under Nuno Espirito Santo – the Italian’s predecessor.

As quoted by Sky Sports last Friday (31 December), Conte confirmed Winks “will stay” at Tottenham past this month’s transfer window, adding that the England international is a “reliable” option.

Whelan suggested the midfielder will be desperate to impress the former Chelsea boss between now and the end of the season.

“Right now, he won’t be looking elsewhere,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“He’ll be trying to impress and really make Conte think: ‘I need to play Harry Winks’.

“At the end of the season, if that game time still isn’t on the level he feels like he wants and needs, then he will have to consider it.

“There will be some real, honest conversations with Conte and they’ll find a solution that’s best for club and player.

“If they are willing to let him go, then that’s the time to be thinking about a new club.

“What Conte wants to see right now is players fighting for their place at Spurs, and he’s taken up that mantle with some solid performances.”

Winks’ Tottenham contract expires at the end of the 2023-24 season.

The midfielder has made 13 appearances for the north London side this term.
