‘Tottenham to sign Heung-min Son replacement soon’ – agreement already in place

Tottenham view Mathys Tel as the long-term successor to Son Heung-min and are planning to make his loan move permanent in the summer.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains well-connected at his former club, explained that Ange Postecoglou’s style of play will get the best out of the 19-year-old.

The Bayern Munich loanee was highly sought-after in the January transfer window, but Tottenham moved ahead of the likes of Man United to complete the deal.

Now, Postecoglou has confirmed that there are already plans in place to activate the forward’s £50million release clause come the end of the season.

Son, 32, is believed to be coming towards the end of his stay at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium given his age, and the club have moved quickly to land his successor.

Meanwhile, Tel is seen as a significant upgrade on Timo Werner – the current alternative to Son on the left-hand side of Postecoglou’s team.

Tottenham make Mathys Tel transfer decision after new talks

The Bayern Munich loanee had made 14 appearances for the German giants this season, and moves to Spurs with a glowing reputation and high hopes for his future.

Robinson has insisted Tottenham have already made the decision to trigger his option to buy clause in the summer, and explained it would take some “woeful” performances for them not to secure a permanent deal given his reputation.

Tottenham won the race, there were a lot of clubs looking at him,” he told Football Insider.

“I think he’s going to be a good signing for Tottenham, he’s a really good player.

“I think if you look at his creativity and his dribbling, he’s an old-fashioned type of attacking player who is not afraid to take players on.

“Given his age, Tottenham are looking at him as the long-term successor to Son.

“He’s certainly an improvement on Timo Werner, so that’s obviously a deal that will come to an end at the end of this season.

“If you’re going to bring in a player in January, you have to make sure he’s an improvement on what you’ve already got, and he ticks that box.

“He’s the long-term answer in that position for Tottenham.

“I think the way Ange Postecoglou plays and the way he’s going to be allowed to play in that team will probably get the best out of him.

“Tottenham have made up their minds on him and he’ll be a permanent Spurs player as long as the finances are right come the end of the season.

“His performances would have to be really woeful for him not to secure a permanent move given the reputation he has got.”

Daniel Levy moving quickly with summer transfer plans

Tottenham’s summer transfer plans are already gathering pace, with a permanent deal for Tel already in place should they opt to trigger their clause.

However, he is not the only player tipped to make the permanent move in the summer, with Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso also on their radar.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 8 February that Spurs are planning to trigger the American’s £21million release clause which becomes active in June.

This comes as Postecoglou has prioritised a move to sign a new defensive midfielder after they were forced to focus their efforts on other positions in January.
