Tottenham to sign multiple defenders this month after ‘very worrying’ development – pundit

Tottenham will sign multiple defenders this month after the club’s “very worrying” first half of the season.

That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Spurs’ defensive woes.

Emiliano Buendia’s goal in New Year’s Day’s loss to Aston Villa marked the 10th time in a row that Spurs had conceded first.

However, Antonio Conte’s side have kept two clean sheets since that match, against Crystal Palace and Portsmouth.

McManus claims Conte will be pushing for Spurs to sign at least two defenders this month in a bid to fix his side’s “awful” defence.

“Records like that are very worrying,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“This whole season has been like that for Tottenham. The defence has been awful, there is no other way to put it.

“Just look at the number of goals Spurs have conceded. Conte’s sides are usually so tight at the back, this isn’t what we are used to.

“I would not be surprised if Tottenham went out and bought a couple of defenders in January because I don’t see them getting into the top four with this current group of players.

“They haven’t been there all season and I don’t see how they get in with these players.”

Tottenham have conceded 25 goals in 18 Premier League games this season.

Spurs are next in action against Arsenal in the North London Derby on Saturday (14 January).
