Tottenham told to approve Eric Dier deal on one condition after fan revolt – Agbonlahor
Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed a new Tottenham deal for Eric Dier could “make sense” – but only if he is a squad player going forward.
The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted he “understands” why fans want Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Clement Lenglet to depart the club.
Sources told this site on 15 April that Tottenham have opened talks with Dier, 29, about extending his contract until the summer of 2026.
The England international’s current deal, which is worth a reported £85,000-a-week, is set to expire in June 2024.
Dier has started all but three of Tottenham’s 31 Premier League games this season but has come in for criticism from fans and pundits alike for his below-par displays.
Meanwhile, Davinson Sanchez was booed by the Spurs home crowd during the 3-2 loss against Bournemouth last week.
Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’s a tough decision because he has some good games, but he is also capable of some really poor performances.
“It’s easy to see why Spurs fans want Dier, Sanchez and Lenglet out of the club. You can understand the frustration.
“But the club might not have the budget for two new centre-backs, so it might make sense to keep Dier on a new contract.

“But if you look at Arsenal with Gabriel and Saliba, and other teams with reliable centre-backs – you understand that frustration.
“He’s better than Sanchez and Lenglet, so you might look to keep Dier as a squad player and get rid of them – but they’ve got to sort out some new blood in defence this summer.”
