Tottenham told to complete signing of ‘sensational’ star ‘just like Coutinho’ after latest development – pundit
Tottenham are in desperate need of an attacking midfielder in the mould of Aston Villa’s Philippe Coutinho, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Premier League striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Spurs have “never replaced” Christian Eriksen.
Antonio Conte’s side bounced back from defeat at Burnley with a 4-0 win over Leeds United on Saturday.
Harry Kane was a constant threat for the visitors and grabbed a goal and an assist at Elland Road.
The centre-forward has been directly involved in 20 goals in the Premier League this season.
Whelan suggested Spurs cannot solely rely on Kane to provide creativity.
“They do not have a midfielder that gets forward and runs beyond Harry Kane,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.
“They don’t have that player who possesses that little bit of brilliance. Someone who will get goals and assists from midfield.
“Let’s be honest, they never replaced Eriksen. They tried with [Giovani] Lo Celso but he was nowhere near the player Eriksen was. It never worked out for him.
“Nobody is going to do anything spectacular like a Coutinho. That’s the kind of player Spurs need, someone just like him.”
Eriksen left Tottenham to join Inter Milan in January 2020.

The Lilywhites signed Lo Celso to replace the Denmark international earlier that season.
However, the left-footer struggled for game time under Antonio Conte and is currently out on loan at Villarreal.
In other news, Tottenham have been tipped by a pundit to sell a £25million-valued player to fund a move an ally for Rodrigo Bentancur.
