Tottenham told to complete three ‘marquee’ signings with two deals close – pundit
Noel Whelan has claimed Tottenham could be “dark horses” next season if they can seal three “marquee” signings in the wake of their top-four finish.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Spurs boss Antonio Conte, 52, must target new additions at centre-back, wing-back and central midfield.
Tottenham completed a stunning fightback in the final games of the season to gazump rivals Arsenal and claim Champions League qualification ahead of rivals Arsenal.
According to The Telegraph (18 May), Conte is looking to add six new faces this summer as they look to take advantage of their return to European football’s top table.
Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (24 May) that Tottenham are close to making Fraser Forster their first summer addition after he accepted a contract offer.
This site also revealed (23 May) that Spurs have opened preliminary talks with Djed Spence and expressed interest in resigning Christian Eriksen this summer.
Whelan insisted wing-back is the area crying out the most for improvement.
“There’s not a great deal wrong with Tottenham and their squad right now,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“They’ve gotten rid of a lot of deadwood. The front three are obviously the big names – but they’ve got great backup options as well, Lucas Moura and Bergwijn.
“It’s just the defence and the midfield. That wing-back position is still a real question mark for Conte – and I think it’s something he’ll address this summer.

“I think a centre-back, a wing-back, a central midfielder have to be on the list.
“If you get three marquee players through the door in those positions – they could be a real dark horse for next season.”
In other news, Tottenham have been told to seal a deal for Eric Dier ally after Conte wish list reported.
