Tottenham told to finalise Djed Spence deal after ‘demoralising’ transfer news – pundit
Noel Whelan has insisted out-of-favour Tottenham star Djed Spence must go out on loan in January after his “demoralising” lack of action this term.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 22-year-old is in danger of following the path of £8.5million youngster Jack Clarke – who departed permanently in the summer after a number of loan spells away from Spurs.
According to The Times (25 October), Tottenham are ready to let three players depart on loan in January as Antonio Conte seeks reinforcements.
The report claims Spence, as well as “unwanted” stars Japhet Tanganga and Bryan Gil, are on the chopping block ahead of the winter window.
Football Insider revealed on Saturday (29 October) that Tottenham are looking to bring in three January signings, with Fabio Paratici given the green light to repeat the success of his mid-season winter of 10 months ago.
Spence, who signed from Middlesbrough in the off-season, has played just three minutes of action in a Lilywhites shirt.
The England Under-21 international notched three goals and five assists in 50 games on loan at Nottingham Forest last term.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “He’s not getting a look in at the moment.
“He was bought in the summer to be the right wing-back they needed, and it’s got to be demoralising for him.
“He was probably thinking that he was going to be starting – but he hasn’t featured at all.
“I think he’s got to go out on loan, but is he going to be another Jack Clarke situation?
“They sent him out on loan every season hoping he would make that step up. It didn’t work out.”

Matt Doherty, Emerson Royal, and Ivan Perisic are all above Spence in the Tottenham pecking order.
Conte’s side sit third in the Premier League after 12 games.
