Tottenham told to find new role for Eric Dier amid ‘uncomfortable’ claim – pundit
Frank McAvennie has claimed Eric Dier still needs to find his “best position” at Tottenham.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-West Ham striker said Dier “doesn’t look comfortable” playing as a centre-half.
The 28-year-old started for Spurs in their opening Premier League game against Southampton on Saturday (6 August).
The defender scored in the Lilywhites’ 4-1 victory over the Saints.
As revealed by WhoScored (6 August), Dier also made 63 passes in the match with an 87 per cent success rate.
When asked for his assessment of the centre-half’s performance, McAvennie told Football Insider: “I don’t think he’s a centre-half.
“Conte will find his best position but he’s been there for years. He loves the club. He is what he says on the tin, you get exactly what you see with him. He’ll not let anyone down. He won’t let the fans down, won’t let the manager down, but you’ve got to find a good position for him.

“For me, he’s not a centre-half. Conte is bringing in good players and he’s still getting a game, I just don’t know where he’s going to play. It’s good to have a player who can go to centre-half for a game or two but he doesn’t look comfortable playing there. He’s not quick enough.
“Conte’s a good manager he’ll sort it out. But he’s still bringing him in so he’s still part of the squad.“
