Tottenham told to seal ‘big signing’ amid ‘scary’ Ivan Perisic claim – pundit

Alex McLeish has urged Tottenham to make a “big” wing-back signing despite the arrival of Ivan Perisic.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland manager admitted the prospect of the 33-year-old playing a defensive role for Antonio Conte “scares” him.

As confirmed on Tuesday (31 May), Perisic has penned a two year deal with Spurs after leaving Inter Milan on a free transfer.

Tottenham highlighted the Croatian’s ability to play as a wing-back, as he did during Conte’s time at the San Siro, in their official announcement.

However, McLeish admitted he has always viewed Perisic as an attacking talent.

He suggested Spurs should look for a big-money signing to strengthen at the back.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “You don’t see Conte stopping playing that system any time soon.

“Perisic, I’ve always seen him as more of an attacking midfielder. To see him being labelled as a wing-back would scare me a wee bit, if he’s playing in that role for Spurs.

“I’d like to see Conte making a big, big signing in terms of getting the money to do that.

“I can only think that it’s to bolster the squad. He will probably be covering one of the players who has done fantastic work for Spurs over the past season.”

Perisic played 42 times under Conte during their time together at Inter Milan.

The Italian manager played the Croatia international as left wing-back, a left-winger and a second striker.

Spurs currently have Sergio Reguilon and Ryan Sessegnon as their left-sided wing-back options.
